Youth United Way Member Haley Wall Wins Judson University Award

United Way of Elgin would like to congratulate Youth United Way's Haley Wahl for winning the inaugural Bea Wilson Youth Award from Judson University at their May 9, 2018 Community Prayer Breakfast. The award, named after Beatrice Wilson, wife of former Judson Trustee D. Ray Wilson, was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Prayer Breakfast. Judson has given out the D. Ray Wilson Volunteer Service Award for 15 years, honoring adult volunteers who contribute to the greater good in the Fox Valley community. At left, Haley accepts her award from Nick Salzmann, Bea Wilson's grandson.

Haley is an active member of Youth United Way, the high school volunteer arm of United Way of Elgin. Youth United members are high school students (freshmen-seniors) from public and private schools within the School District U-46 attendance area. The purpose of Youth United is to acquaint youth with their charitable community, to foster leadership skills, and to volunteer in / for agencies funded by the United Way of Elgin.  The focal point is community service.

Currently in her sophomore year at Elgin High School's Gifted and Talented Academy, Haley joined YUW as a freshman, following in the footsteps of her older sister. Haley has been an very active member of YUW, volunteering at Centro de Informacion's Annual Gala, the City of Elgin's Nightmare on Chicago Street, the Community Crisis Center's Holiday Toy Giveaway, and done food drives and cookie bakes to support local food pantries and soup kettles. In addition to her services to YUW, Haley is also very involved at school. As a member of the Gifted and Talented Academy, she is on the honor roll, co-captain of the girl's volleyball team, a member of EHS's highly lauded Marching Band and Drumline, and a member of the Student Council. If that weren't enough, she's also been involved with the YMCA's Camp Edwards and dances with an Irish Dance troupe!

When United Way of Elgin nominated Haley for this award, it was not difficult to get letters of recommendation from community members. We believe Haley has an extremely bright future and a true heart for service. We're thrilled to see her achievements recognized by Judson University and the community at large.
