Early Learning “Success By 6™”

No doubt about it, parenting is a difficult job. While most things in life come with an instruction manual, children do not. There are countless resources to help parents and caregivers. But, as a new parent or the parent of a growing and changing child, how do you know what resources are the best, most up-to-date? United Way of Elgin’s Success By 6™ can help direct you.

Success By 6™ is a national United Way strategy in more than 350 cities across the country all focused on improving school readiness through local community change. While local strategies, goals, and objectives vary, the ultimate outcome is that young children enter school ready to succeed and ensure a healthy start.

Reading Success

Millions of American children get to 4th grade without learning to read proficiently. On average, 32% of 3rd graders in our community are not reading proficiently – and that puts them on the track to dropping out of school.

The process of dropping out begins long before a child gets to high school. Children who enter kindergarten not ready to read are much more likely to be reading below grade-level by the end of the 3rd grade.

Reading Success programs are building literacy skills to ensure all students are able to read at grade level by the end of third grade.

College and Career Readiness

As we move through the second decade of the 21st century, the need to ensure that youth succeed in life after high school has become more pressing than ever before. A solid education has become the foundation for a good life. Consider the following:

      • Most jobs today that pay wages or salaries high enough to support a family require skills associated with at least some education beyond high school.
    • Employers today need skilled workers at all levels; yet, employers report that workers with no education beyond high school are three times less likely to be prepared for work than recent college graduates.
    • Individuals with bachelor’s degrees earn on average $21,800 more per year and $900,000 more over a lifetime than those with only high school diplomas. Those with a two-year college degree earn $400,000 more over a lifetime than high school graduates.

Strong and Secure Families

Building strong and secure families is not easy. Despite hard work and good values, thousands of low to middle-income families often struggle to meet everyday obligations, and many rarely have enough left to save, or to be prepared for financial emergencies.

United Way is helping to stabilize families by connecting them with resources to stay in their homes, afford utilities or make sure they have enough food. We know that when we give families the tools and support to improve their lives, we help them create a strong future for themselves and their children—and we strengthen our entire community.

Through counseling, quality health care services and financial education, United Way is helping families deal with the challenges of everyday life, and making it possible for them to lay the foundation for a brighter future.
